In general, Logan does very well when I cut his hair. That is, he does well as long as I don't take too long to cut it.

Last week when I cut Logan's hair he held remarkably still when I used the scissors to clean up the back and trim around his ears. I think I took a little too long cleaning up the edges because he was decidedly "done" by the time I was ready to take him out of his chair.

Posterior Pelvic Pain (Sacroiliac Joint Pain)

Very recently I have been experiencing a very sharp pain in the very lower left side of my back (dare I say left buttock). This intense pain can be triggered by just about anything, from lifting something off the ground to simple things like going from a sitting to standing position. The intense pain comes and goes as I move, but the dull lingering pain seems to be here to stay.

Note: I know what an achy lower back feels like...this is not a muscle pain, or simply back pain. This is intense.

I had pain like this while pregnant with Logan and I think I mistook it for Sciatica, however upon further research it seems like I'm experiencing Posterior Pelvic Pain (Sacroiliac Joint Pain) which can begin later in pregnancy.

I don't like being pregnant, and yet Bryan and I want more kids so here I am. I don't want to complain, I know what I signed up for, but unfortunately this is more painful than I remembered. I'm walking like a cripple, and I'm already nervous about the next time I work at Logan's school. Standing up, sitting down, it's all I can do not to scream out each time the pain strikes.

I'm 25 weeks along. +/- 15 weeks may seem like an eternity if this pain continues, but hopefully (like most pregnancy and labor pain) will be a distant memory when I hold our newest addition in my arms.

website facelift

Over the weekend I updated my website to include all my artistic endeavors vs using it solely as a photography website. The home page is a collage of images ranging anywhere from my theatrical designs, graphic designs to photography, and each time the website is refreshed the images change.

There is still much to add and much to pair down (I have too many images under photography). Regardless, I'm liking the change.

Today (at the age of 2 years, 4 months), Logan read a few words to Grandma. She held up a flashcard, covering the image, and to my surprise he knew the word. His attention was lost quickly, but for those few minutes Logan was sight-reading words like: corn, cat, keys and fish. I had never thought to ask him to read words. I'm amazed daily by this little boy!

I've decided to write and illustrate a children's book this year. I have concept sketches for the main character and a 1st draft written. Time to edit and get to work deciding how I want to go about the artwork. I think I will draw in pencil and do the color application in Photoshop.

I was 23 weeks along.

I think this photo is deceiving because I feel much larger than I may actually look. I'm currently 25 weeks along, we still haven't landed on a name for this little boy. I have one in mind, and although Bryan likes the name, I'm waiting on him to give his approval or rejection.

This little guy is quite active at times, especially at night. He'll give me quick, strong jabs just to let me know he's still there, sometimes pushing on two sides of my belly at once. He's pretty strong for 25 weeks! Logan was very active, and baby boy#2 is too, but in a different way. Logan rolled and bumped, this little guy likes to poke and jab.

schizophrenic artist

For years I have struggled with the idea that I need to hone my skills and become great at ONE thing. I sometimes feel like a schizophrenic as I jump from theatrical scenic design, to photography, to graphic design, to painting, to drawing, to designing onesies for babies. Each time hoping I land on THE thing I'm suppose to give my full artistic attention to. Alas, I like to do many things and now I'm deturmined to write and illustrate a children's book this year. I'm in no way honing my skills, just broadening my horizons.

It finally dawned on me...it's OK. It's OK that I'm a schizophrenic artist with many interests. Although I will probably still envy those who have a single calling, I need to be true to myself and follow the tides. Phases of life bring about new projects and creative ideas. When I was on track to get my MFA at Purdue for scenic and costume design I did not realize the sewing skills I picked up would later translate to designing baby wear. What babies wore never crossed my mind until I became pregnant with Logan.

So what's my point? My point is that I'm finally (at the age of 30!) deciding not to put myself into a box. I've always hated the question "What do you do?" for that very reason. "Me? Ugh...I...Um...I'm Logan's mom and I do freelance design work."

Whether I'm designing a logo, drawing up a page for my children's book, doing a photo-shoot, or building a scale model from my 1/4" drafting I'm certain there is a thread of my artistic style that links all I do.

THEREFORE, I'm playing with the idea of reformatting www.meganscheidler.com. Embracing my various interests, and embracing the fact that I will probably never be a full-time ________ or _________ or even _________. I think it's time to just have an artist's webpage. If someone wants to hire me to take photos of their newborn baby--AWESOME! If someone sees my illustration work and wants to team up and work on a book together--GREAT! If someone likes my scenic design style and wants to hire me--SUPER, but maybe in a few years when my kid(s) are a little older. So I'll take my old site: www.scheidlerdesigns.com and bring those elements into my photogarphy website to create a single website.

I feel liberated. :)

I know whatever we decide to name baby boy #2 will suit him. Whatever name we choose does not incline him to success or failure, ridicule or popularity, mean or tenderheartedness. I know that. So why is picking one, ONE name so tricky?

It's permanence? It's potential nicknames?
The opinions of others? Nah, surely someone has an evil ex-boyfriend with _________ for a name, or ________ was the weird boy in their grade-school who picked his nose.

Logan was going to be Logan from the moment we knew we were having a boy. Otherwise he would probably called Lily. But baby boy #2 is tricky. Sure we have a list of names, a list that grows and shortens, a list that has been paired down to one until I throw two more back in the mix.

Bryan, Megan and Logan end with AN...is that too "cute", shall we break the pattern? Would anyone even notice...well, now they might. Do we go with a name that begins with L? Only to complete our family with Lily as the third, or perhaps (ironically) insuring we have another boy if we choose to have three. ;)

Sure, I'm only 22 weeks along...we have time to decide. However, I find it easier to connect if I can use his name, his actual (going to be given) name when I talk about him.

I'm an over-thinker, planner...but some things I suppose cannot be rushed.

Dear, baby boy #2, you will get a name and I'm sure it'll fit you well....I'll read off my list...kick once for YES and twice for PLEASE NO. ;)

Today we celebrated Logan's cousin Jack's birthday, at the ever so awesome Amy's Indoor Playground. Such a fun place for kids to play!

I love this picture because not only do I think Logan is super cute, but it reminds me how big he's getting...he's definitely not my little baby any more! I suppose that is ok since baby boy#2, Ebenezer Sheldon Scheidler (ok, that's NOT his name), is going to make his appearance in 4.5 months.

Three's a crowd

Logan has never shared our bed, but one night during the 5 day power-outage we attempted to let him do so. It was sweet and tragic, and I don't want to try it again.

This was the night we decided to sleep on the living room floor, with the fire going in the fireplace for heat, which in itself was a disaster.

Anyhow, Logan was SO excited to sleep between us that he was beside himself. He became so affectionate! He kept leaning in to give me lengthy kisses on the lips. Logan also wanted to lay across me with his arms hugging me tightly and his face smashed into mine (cheek to cheek). I thought to myself, "This can't be comfortable for him, because it surely was not for me!" And yet, he continue to lay there, smashed into my face, draped across my pregnant belly still and relaxed. I only knew he wasn't sleeping because I could feel his eyelashes fluttering against my face. After about 5 minutes of this sweet torture I had to move him. Logan cuddled nicely in my arms for less than 5 minutes, which I enjoyed but he was jabbing his feet into Bryan's side.

Defeated, we put Logan back into the pack-n-play. That was by far the worst night's sleep we got during the power-outage.

We are all still recouping from last weeks wind-storm. The winds blew at hurricane speed last Wednesday night, leaving hefty damage to our city and neighboring cities. [LA Times Photos]

Fortunately we had minimal damage to our property. Our cars were scratched by the falling limbs of the large oak directly in front of our house (thankfully the oak in its entirety did not fall), and our back yard fence blew down giving Roxie two backyards to call home. We lost power for 121 hours, but knew others who had their power out for longer. We had hot water and our gas burning stove to make hot meals, but other than that we were braving the cold nights like the rest of our surrounding cities.

We were thankful our neighbor not only had a chain saw, but came over and helped Bryan remove the oak branches that were filling our entire front yard.

Without use of our heater the nights got rather cold...4 layers of clothing, plus 3 heavy blankets seemed to do the trick. After the second night without power I fell into a routine of getting the house ready for night. Around 4:15PM I would gather and restock our candle supply, place matches by the stove, set out bedtime layers and blankets, and put away any toys as to not trip on them in the dark.

One night we tried to sleep on the living room floor with a fire going in the fireplace. We thought this would be warmer and therefore more comfortable. Did I mention it was seriously freezing at night? Well...there must be something wrong with our fireplace since when the fire got larger traces of smoke started to enter the house. We tried opening a window to help the wind suction to go up the chimney, but we just let more cold air inside. Eyes slightly burning, the smoke triggered the deep cough I had been trying to get rid of all week (deep coughing is really not fun while pregnant).

We had Logan in a pack-n-play on the other side of the couch, hoping that not seeing us would help him sleep better. No such luck. We ended up trying to have him sleep between us. That did not go well...more on that later.

We are now working with our insurance company to get the cars and fence fixed and it sounds like they will also cover the cost of food in our fridge. After 5 full days of no power everything in the fridge/freezer had to be tossed.

It's been a crazy time for everyone affected by the Santa Ana winds last week...streets are still lined with branches and I'm not sure if power has been restored to all. We are so thankful to have power [HEAT!] again. If nothing else, this event has been a wake up call and we are taking serious stock of our earthquake supplies.

The winds shoved these twigs about 6" into my car...They were stuck! I couldn't pull them out.

Brown scratches over 75% of my car. Thankfully, insurance should cover fresh paint and body work needed to fix the passenger side rear door.

Corn, Potato, and Leek Chowder

Corn, Potato, and Leek Chowder

1 tbs butter
2 leeks, cleaned and sliced (white and light green parts only)
3 carrots, diced
1 celery stalk, diced
2 (1/2-pound) baking potatoes, peeled and diced into small pieces
4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1 cup water
1/2 tsp dried thyme
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp freshly ground pepper
1 (10-ounce) package frozen corn kernels, thawed

1. Melt the butter in a non stick pot over medium-high heat. Add the leeks, carrots, and celery. Cook, stirring frequently, until the leeks are softened, about 5 minutes. Add the potatoes, broth, water, thyme, salt and pepper; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until the potatoes are soft, about 20 minutes.

2. Add the corn and simmer, covered about 4 minutes. Mash lightly with a potato masher to break up the potatoes.

Notes:
Starchy, low-moisture baking potatoes work well with this chowder. Unlike waxy potatoes which hold their shape when cooked, baking potatoes tend to fall apart, which is ideal for thickening soups. Mashing the potatoes with a potato masher also helps the thickening process.

Because they grown in sandy soil, leeks need to be rinsed thoroughly. Trim of the root ends and dark green tops, leaving the white and light green parts. Slice thinly, place in a colander, and since under running water until there is no more sand. Drain well.

Of course my belly is not as big as I was at 17 weeks with Logan, but I did start to show at 5 weeks (no really, see below), and was in maternity pants at 6 weeks. I suppose it's nice to quickly breeze past the awkward stage where people are afraid to ask, and into the stage where it's obvious that I'm pregnant.

I cannot believe my little Logan is now two years old!

Logan had his first day of preschool last week and he's saying a new word just about every day. The other day we were eating dinner and he kept requesting "Fries?" Yesterday's words were Zoozie (grandma) and Roxie. Today he would call for "Auntie" and then drag my sister around the house with him.

He still LOVES stars, letters (singing the alphabet) and numbers. He tends to skip the letters E, L and W is more of a sound-effect at this point. Logan can count to 10 (with me), yet 4 is always plural. "Three...Fours...Five..." His new favorite thing to watch on TV is Cars, and he will continue to request "cars...Cars...CARS!" until I put in the DVD.

Logan is very strong willed and he has a hard time when he doesn't get his way, but I'm hopeful when he gains more words, his ability to communicate will alleviate some of his frustration. A few times, through tears he has told me, "I'm sad." So I think we are headed in the right direction.

There is a lot to come this year. Logan will not only learn a lot in preschool, but he will become a big brother this May. Exciting times ahead.

Front Porch

Yesterday Bryan pressure-washed the front porch, and today he power-sanded off any old paint that could possibly flake off. Didn't he do a fantastic job?? The porch was at one point red, another time blue and then beige.

I had the easy job...painting the cement. Looks SO much better, don't you think? We also plan to do the back porch in the next few weeks before the new windows go in.

After watching me paint swatches on the dinning room wall these past two weeks, I be Lgoan thought that particular wall was fair game as he added his (non-washable) red pencil drawings this morning. Good thing we are repainting soon.

Color: Buckskin

I think I've found the color I've been searching for. Dunn Edward's Buckskin. I was thinking of going more yellow-beige, but then I found this khaki brown that has green pistachio look to it when applied to the wall. It's crazy how different a color can look painted on the wall vs on the paint chip.

My original "first choice" looks really really yellow in the picture below...it's not nearly as soothing as this new color. Now that I'm pretty sure about my color choice I've narrowed down the window shades to this woven material with green boarder. But I still have a few weeks to refine my decision. :)

Today Bryan power-washed the paint off our cement front porch. (I got to help a little and it was really cool). Hopefully tomorrow I can give the porch a fresh coat of cement paint. I found a perfect match at Dunn Edwards.

Now if only I could keep my porch plants alive...I suppose I can tackle my lack of green thumb another day.

Meanwhile, as Bryan power-washed, I tried out a paint stripper in the corner of our dinning room. This stuff is no joke. After two applications the paint on the baseboard was almost all gone, and there were at least 6 coats of paint to eat through! Unfortunately some of the hardwood seal-coat looks to be gone too, and I was careful.

I'm trying to decide what the best course of action is. (1) Do I just do a quick sanding and add a fresh coat of paint to the current 6 layers of chipped paint, or (2) do I try to remove all of the paint with paint stripper (carefully not to get the floor) before painting white again? OR (3) do I rip out the baseboard and ask Bryan to put in new stuff? Probably not the most cost effective solution, but after today it may be a good one.

I love our old (1920's) house...I just sometimes wish it were not SO old.

Paint, windows, and other projects

We just ordered our new windows and in 3-4 weeks they will be installed! Super exciting! In order to make this project affordable, we are doing half of the house now and half next year. The hope is that our living room, dining area and kitchen will stay cooler this summer.

There are a few "Do It Our-self" projects we are going to do in the next 3-4 weeks. We plan to strip the paint on the beams on our ceiling and stain them (they are currently painted dark brown). If it looks bad, we may just paint them white. In the same vein, we are going to paint all of the ceilings white (they are currently wall color) and sand and repaint the baseboard trim. That's not all...we plan to pressure wash our front and back cement porches and repaint (using cement) paint) to bring them back to their former glory. IF we choose, we also may fix our wooden railing in the back yard, which was chewed up by puppy Roxie in her younger years. These are fairly straight forward projects and I know Bryan and I can tackle them ourselves.

Back to the windows: I've been wracking my brain on what type of blinds and window treatments to order. I think it's harder when you are designing for your own home. I plan to wait until the new windows are in before ordering any blinds to insure the proper size so I have some time to figure out the best look.

I've picked out the new wall color: Wheat Bread from Dunn Edwards, which is slightly more yellow (warm) than the current color. I'm leaning toward THESE window panels but I may just go with a simple white drape like THIS, plus I like the grommet style drape.

I cannot decide on which roman shade material I like best.

Bryan and I will soon be replacing our very old (1920's) wooden windows with energy efficient fiberglass windows. We are very excited and hope this will help keep our heating/cooling bill down. Our windows are quite drafty and let in things like rain and spiders. I'm especially happy about keeping OUT the latter.

With final measurements made this morning, will soon be replacing windows in the living room, dining area and kitchen. We (I) decided to take this opportunity to repaint the walls. We've lived in our house 5 years this July and the walls in these high-traffic rooms could use a fresh coat of paint. I've been to Dunn Edwards a few times in the past few weeks, and after two samples on the wall, I think I have my new color. The current wall color is not bad, it's a beige with slightly red undertones, but I decided I wanted to go with a more golden color. We like the color called Wheat Bread which is an earthy yellow.

I've found a nice natural woven shade from Smith and Nobel for inside the windows, but I'm torn on what to do with the drapery panels. I LOVE the pattern on our current drapes for it's bold yet simple pattern (one of my best Pier One finds), but I want to switch to blues, greens and yellow. Our kitchen has red tile so I ran with red in the living room/dining area. Searching options has made my brain hurt...I may just revert to white drapes. Clean and simple.

BUT wait...i just found THIS! My current drapery in blue and green!!! I can sew a straight line and with my mom's help I'm sure we can make simple drapery panels. Only one problem...I can only find this fabric in the UK. Maybe it's worth it? Can I convert meters to yards, maybe. Should I buy multiple meters of fabric sight unseen? I'd probably need to buy a sample first.

Last night we were down in Hermosa Beach celebrating my sister's 22nd birthday. As we often do, we were making speculations regarding who Logan looks like. There is no doubt that he looks like Bryan. The very first photo I took of Logan looks like a mini-Bryan. I do think he looks like me, BUT after further investigation, it seems that Logan looks very much like my dad's baby pictures...I'd dare to say that he looks VERY much like a Heuer after all.

Trapped in the bathroom

Logan gave me a pretty good scare the other day. I will say that I did not panic and all was fixed in a matter of 10 minutes.

What happened? Well...Logan found the bathroom door opened and he quickly seized the opportunity since I usually keep the door closed. He shut the door behind him, which in itself is no big deal, but he also opened a drawer that blocked all entry to and from the bathroom.

Don't panic! There are baby-locks on the cabinet below the sink and the toilet.

I found my self miming to Logan to "close the drawer" without any luck. Through the tiny crack in the door I tried to push the drawer with a wooden spoon, no grip. A rubber spatula. Ok, worked for an inch but the door had to close to 1/4" in order to shut the drawer. No luck so far.

"Oh, thanks." Logan just handed me a Q-tip.

I text Bryan this photo with a description of the problem:

Luckily, Hazel had the idea to get a wire hanger. So I MacGyver'd a hook out of a wire hanger and slipped it around the front of the opened drawer. In a matter of minutes I was IN. Only to find that we needed more Q-tips. ;)

I love this boy, and I can see now that he is definitely going to give me grey hair before I'm 40.

Since I costumed Xanadu at Western Christian, I felt compelled to dress Logan as Xanadu's leading man, Sonny Malone.

Spinach Quiche Cups

This week, Bryan and I have been eatting these spinach quiche cups for breakfast. These mini quiche freeze and reheat nicely for a healthy (no thinking involved) breakfast. This is also a modified South Beach Diet recipe.

Spinach Quiche Cups
12 quiche, serves 6

1 package (10 oz) frozen chopped spinach
6 eggs
3 cloves of garlic, diced
1/2 brown onion, diced
1 c. shredded reduced-fat cheese (I used sharp cheddar)
3 drops hot-pepper sauce (optional)

Microwave the spinach for 3 mins on high. Drain the excess liquid.

Line a 12-cup muffin pan with foil baking cups. Spray cups with cooking spray.

Combine all ingredients, mix well. Divide evenly among the muffin cups. Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 mins, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Quiche cups can be frozen and reheated in the microwave. I heat the frozen quiche for 30 seconds in the microwave, sprinkle a small amount of the reduced-fat shredded cheese on top and microwave for 1 minute longer.

Apple Cinnamon Walnut Muffins

I've been cooking and baking quite a bit this week. I like to make things that can be frozen and then popped in the microwave when I'm ready to eat them. These muffins are a variation of a South Beach Diet muffin. Enjoy!

Apple Cinnamon Walnut Muffins
12 muffins

1 1/2 c flour (I used whole wheat flour)
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 c buttermilk
3 tbls canola oil
1/4 c packed brown sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 med apple, finely chopped
1/2 cup chopped walnuts + some extra for sprinkling

Preheat oven 400 degrees F.

Line a 12-cup muffin pan with baking cups (I like foil baking cups).

Chop apple and toss with 1 tsp cinnamon, set aside.

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, 1 tsp cinnamon, and salt.

In a large bowl, combine the buttermilk, oil, brown sugar, and egg. Stir in the flour mixture until just combined. Do not over-mix. Stir in apples and walnuts.

Evenly divide the batter among the prepared muffin cups (I like to use a spring-release ice cream scoop). Sprinkle some extra walnuts on top of each muffin, press into batter. Bake for 15 mins, or until a wooden pick inserted in the enter of a muffin comes out clean.

I can't believe my kid is already a year and a half!

Logan is so smart and funny. He's charming, and he know it. He gets into everything and yet can be quite methodical when he plays (lining up the wooden animals and then placing them back in the wooden ark one-by-one). Anything can be turned into a drum (my hairbrush and the kitchen trash can for example), and any piece of fabric will become a cape. Last week he found the extra crib sheet in his dresser and was running around the house with it draped over his shoulders.

This boy LOVES his daddy and it's really fun to see them play while I get dinner ready.

Logan's sweetness is apparent when he plops in our lap just to sit for awhile, and in the periodic kisses he so delicately plants on our lips. When you hear a little "mmmm" sound, get ready, he's gonna make his rounds and start kissing everyone in the room. These kisses cannot be summoned, they are only given if/when he chooses.

I'm looking forward to when Logan has more words to express his wants, needs and frustrations, however I'm going to miss his babble. The very deliberate, why don't you people understand me, I'm making perfect sense, babble. He has much to say.

Logan will start 2 days per week of preschool in the Fall, and I'm excited to see him grow in a school environment.

Why hello there blog...it's been awhile.

Since my last entry Logan turned 18 months old, Bryan and I took our first official vacation as a family (of three) to Napa Valley with our good friends the Quezadas, I conducted a few photo-shoots, we saw the 1980's band Devo at LA Live, and we started work on the spring musical Xanadu.

I can't wait to see what Spring and Summer have in store. I do know one thing...Bryan and I both turn 30 this summer, and we've already started planning our 30th Birthday Party. ;)

Chicken Milanese Style

This is my new favorite chicken recipe:

Chicken Milanese Style
4 (3 oz) chicken breast cutlets (I've also used 2 chicken breasts cut into strips)
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 cup Italian-seasoned dried bread crumbs
2 tbs grated Parmesan cheese
1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil

Sprinkle chicken with the pepper. Combine the bread crumbs and Parmesan on a sheet of wax paper; coat the chicken with the crumb mixture, pressing lightly so it adheres. Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook until browned and cooked through.

*You can also bake the chicken at 425 degrees for 35 mins.

*Lately, I've been dipping the raw chicken into flour and then into a beaten egg before dipping into the breadcrumb mixture. This ensures the breadcrumb and Parmesan mix sticks to the chicken.

Side of Green Beans
green beans
oil oil
garlic cloves (as much as you want)
salt/pepper

Wash green beans and cut off ends. Cut in half or leave whole. Put green beans in steaming basket above 2" water, water should not touch beans. Boil water and steam for 5 minutes, or until crisp/tender. Remove beans and water from pan. Add garlic gloves and about 1 tablespoon olive oil to pan. Cook garlic on low heat until they just start to brown (do not over cook). Turn off heat and toss in beans. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot.

meal planning

Meal planning is an art.

I want to expand the list of meals I cook on a regular basis. 1) It's more cost effective than eating out and 2) it's healthier.

With the help of my mom, I complied a notebook of recipes to try. I only stuck with Weight Watchers recipes this week.

Here is my list:
- Leek, Potato and Corn Chowder
- Chicken & Artichoke Vesuvio
- Chicken Legs and Potato "Nachos"
- Spaghetti Bolognese
- Chicken Milanese Style with green beans
- Garlicky Beef with Snow Peas and rice

Last week Bryan, Logan and I and spent some time in San Diego. We had the opportunity to visit Amanda at her work and meet the adorable twin girls she nannies.

Logan acted very shy when he met Dani. He later he tried to lean in to head-butt (kiss) one of the girls and eventually rolled into her lap since he was sleepy. My little flirty boy.

Logan and Finn played this morning. They sat close and watched Yo Gabba Gabba, making little comments to each-other. Logan kept sharing his toys, only to take them right back, and Finn didn't seem to mind (possibly since he's a third born and use to Logan's version of sharing) as long as I handed him a replacement toy. They talked over Cheerios, let Roxie sniff their feet, and eventually ate some snack. Finn was very happy to see that we have a "dog!"

Finn let me hold him when he was homesick. He nuzzled into my shoulder...a true cuddler. Logan does not cuddle, unless VERY tired, but he seemed a tad jealous as he came over and leaned on my leg.

Logan eats when I put food in front of him, but not Finn. The first time I put them at the table for snack, Logan gobbled up his food and Finn sat quietly in protest. "I'm not hungry yet" his brown eyes said. So we played a little more until Finn walked over to the table and pointed up at his food. Very direct, I like that.

These cousins were born four days apart (Oct 1st and Oct 5th), so it's interesting for me to see them interact. Finn looks like he's thinking things through when Logan seems to act first, think later. Both boys wanted to sit next to the other, but Logan couldn't decide wether to pat Finn's back or push him. At one point Logan was happy to just hold Finn's foot and watch TV. Yes, they are that cute.

I was feeling a little impulsive earlier this week...I grabbed the hair clippers (the ones I use on Bryan's hair) and chopped off Logan's wavy locks. It's SO short! I'm a little remorseful since Logan looks different, or older, or older and different. BUT...I also think he looks handsomely cute.

Ever since I received my new Cannon 7D, I've been a little out of my element. It's like I traded in my simple automatic car for a high-end manual sports car...and I don't drive stick. I've been needing some practice with my new camera, and Sarah was a perfect and willing model.

I am so fortunate to know this lovely young lady. She is strong yet kind, sweet spirited and funny. I had such a blast with this shoot.

I just got back from a Mostly Mozart rehearsal...the set is almost complete. Major kudos to Mark our TD! Now all we need is a coat of black paint on the floor, fake weeds sprouting from the brick.

Perhaps building with metal (a building twist required by the Fire Marshall) is a blessing in disguise. Metal, unlike wood, does not warp which means easily achieved square corners.

Work Day #1: Stage Floor

Work Day #2: Framing for Back wall (and yes, that is plywood on top of the metal frame).

Plan for Work Day #3: We will put down laminate flooring and face the back wall with luan.

On a show related note, my costume design is coming along and I have already purchased many costume pieces. Most importantly, most everything FITS!

Western Christian High School will be performing Neil Simon's God's Favorite this January. This comedy based on the story of Job is a must see.

Show dates: Jan 7-8 and 13-15th.

I'm designing the set and costumes for the show and Bryan is the technical director. Due to requirements set by the fire marshall, we are venturing into the world of building the set entirely with metal framing (instead of wood).

For this production we are creating a thrust stage (audience will be on three sides). Here's a sneak peak at my front elevation sketch for the back wall:

Birthday BBQ

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to...

Sadly, Logan and I have been sick all week. This is Logan's first cold and I have a knack for catching whatever is going around, so we're both sick.

It all started the day before the party...Logan had a temperature of at least 102.5. His fever carried into the day of his party, so as you can imagine he was a bit of a zombie during the BBQ. Poor little guy threw up once during the party, but after a change of clothes and some cuddling he managed to eat some cake. That's my boy!

Mini Margarita Cupcakes

I made four varieties of cupcakes for my mother-in-law Mary Sue's 60th birthday party. Seeing as though the theme was "Mexican Fiesta" my mini margarita cupcakes were a hit!

I adapted a recipe for the cake and another buttercream recipe for the frosting, and of course in my haste I did not write down all the adjustments I made. Bummer! Next time I make these I will pay very close attention to my measurements and WRITE THEM DOWN.

So, with that said...this is the recipe I created for my mini margarita cupcakes....I think.

Yield: aprox 75 mini cupcakes

Mini cupcakes:

2 cups all purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/8 teaspoon salt

1 C. (2 sticks) salted butter at room temperature

2 C. sugar

4 eggs at room temperature

1/2 C. milk

1/2 C. tequila

6 tablespoons lime juice

zest from 3 limes

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Line mini muffin pans with paper liners.

2. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt and set aside.

3. Rub the lime zest into the sugar and set aside.

4. Cream the butter until smooth, then add the sugar gradually, beating until light and fluffy.

5. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

6. Add the flour and the liquids alternately in three parts.

7. Fill each cupcake cup with 1 tablespoon of batter.

8. Bake for aprox 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove as soon as tops start to turn brown.

9. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

Frosting:

1 C. (2 sticks) butter, at room temperature and soft!

1/2 cup tequila

1/4 cup lime juice

2 teaspoons triple sec

zest from 3 limes

6-8 cups confectioners' (powdered) sugar

Place the butter in a large mixing bowl. Add 4 cups of the sugar, the tequila, lime juice, lime zest and triple sec. On medium speed of an electric mixer, beat until smooth. Gradually add the remaining sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. (Note: I would add more tequila and sugar until I achieve the right consistency with the right amount of tequila kick.) If desired, add a some green gel coloring to your mix.

Once the cupcakes are completely cooled, pipe a little dollop of frosting on each cupcake. Roll the cupcake in clear sugar crystals so it appears to have a salted rim, and top with a few flakes of margarita salt.
